Conservation Officer Hiring Process

1. The process begins by successfully completing the Michigan Civil Service Commission (MCSC) Entry Level Law Enforcement Exam #2002. Click on the link for the exam application. All conservation officer vacancy postings will use MCSC's electronic system powered by NEOGOV. In addition, you may want to fill out a Job Interest Card to receive an email notification each time a position opens with the State of Michigan whose category matches one of the categories you've chosen. Click the Law Enforcement box for conservation officer. More information is available at www.michigan.gov/mdcs, or contact MCSC at 1-800-788-1766. After applying for the exam and filling out the job interest card, continue to create your profile on the Civil Service website. While on the website, select "Employment Information," then "General Information," then click on "My Profile" and "create an account."

2. The vacancy posting will include a list of additional requirements and information that you will be required to submit when you apply: cover letter, resume, job-fit questionnaire, location preference sheet, transcripts, DD214, and passing results from the MCSC exam (if available). It is important that all documents submitted are complete.

3. Successful applicants will be mailed a notification packet indicating the date, time, and location of their pre-screening interview. The required documents within the packet must be completed prior to the scheduled pre-screening interview: copies of the MCSC exam results (if not previously submitted), completed Experience and Education Questionnaire, proof of Live Scan fingerprint submission, DD214 (military service), and a picture ID. Applicants must also pass the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) physical fitness test prior to the pre-screening interview.

4. Applicants successfully completing the pre-screening interview will be assigned a background investigator.

5. After the background investigation is completed, successful applicants will be scheduled for a final interview.

6. Successful applicants will be forwarded to Human Resources for review and approval. Accepted applicants will receive a conditional offer of employment, which requires the successful passing of psychological testing, MCOLES medical, hearing, eye exam and drug screening prior to being hired.

7. Upon successful passing of the conditional offer of employment requirements, applicants are hired and begin training. Training consists of a 22 week DNR Law Enforcement academy, followed by 18 weeks of field training in the Probationary Training Program with an additional four weeks of specialized break-out sessions in the areas of marine, off-road vehicles, fish & game, and waterfowl identification and enforcement.
